Students who intend to register for any MATH course numbered MATH 100A to MATH 106 must satisfy both a prerequisite requirement and a readiness requirement.
Prerequisite Requirement
Student must pass the prerequisite course(s) in high school or college with a grade of "P", "C" or better. If the prerequisite was taken more than once, the most recent grade is the applicable one.
Readiness Requirement
Students who register for a course for which they are not qualified under this policy will be dropped from the course.
Math Placement Exam
During New Student Enrollment, the Math Placement Exam is given in the morning.
All new students are required to take the exam. Calculators permitted. Students
can take the on-line version of the Math Placement Exam at the Arts &
Sciences Testing Center located in 127 Burnett Hall. See department web
site (http://www.math.unl.edu/pi/studentResources/mathPlacementExam)
for hours of operation. Students are allowed to take up to three
placement exams per year without special permission.
To take the exam, a photo ID is required.
MATH 100A
Many students will begin college Math with MATH 101 or a higher level Math course. Students who do not qualify on the Math Placement Exam for MATH 101 but do qualify for MATH 100A may take MATH 100A (Intermediate Algebra) in order to prepare for MATH 101. Hours earned in MATH 100A will not count toward degree requirements.
Students must receive special written permission from the Vice Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to register for MATH 100A if they have previously received credit or will receive credit concurrently in any math course numbered MATH 101 or above.
MATH 101
Credit cannot be earned in MATH 101 if credit has been earned or will be earned concurrently in a Math course numbered MATH 103 or higher without written permission from the Vice Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
MATH 102
Credit cannot be earned in MATH 102 if credit has been earned or will be earned concurrently in a Math course numbered MATH 103 or in any Math course numbered 106 or higher without written permission from the Vice Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
MATH 103
Credit cannot be earned in MATH 103 if credit has been earned or will be earned concurrently in a Math course numbered MATH 104 or higher without written permission from the Vice Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Credit cannot be earned for both MATH 103 and either MATH 101 or MATH 102.
MATH 104 and 106
Credit cannot be earned for both MATH 104 and MATH 106. A student with credit in both MATH 104 and MATH 106 may count a total of five credit hours from the two courses toward graduation requirements.
